Every artist has a turning point. For me, it came when I tried a bold new style. I broke a self-portrait into flat planes of color and showed it to my sister. Naturally, I was curious what she would think.
She didn’t say “nice work.” Instead, she said, “You should paint dead celebrities.”
So I did. As a result, my pop art celebrity portraits were born. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.
What Makes These Pop Art Celebrity Portraits Different
First, take a look at this piece. It shows me staring back in green, gold, purple, and red. I painted it in acrylic on gallery-stretched canvas. At the time, I had no idea it would start an entire series. Looking back, it was the perfect starting point.
The style strips a face down to its essential shapes. Then it rebuilds those shapes in unexpected colors. Colors that have no business being there — and yet somehow feel completely right. In fact, that tension is exactly what makes the style so striking.
Andy Warhol is an obvious influence. However, my approach is entirely my own. For example, Warhol used photography and screen printing. I, on the other hand, work by hand with acrylic paint. Consequently, every brushstroke is a conscious decision. Every color choice is intentional.
