Most artists admire the celebrities they paint from a distance. For me, one of them sat a few rows away in high school. Consequently, my digital portrait of Frank Zappa is more than just art — it’s a personal memory brought to life through technology.
Frank Zappa and I attended the same high school. As a result, when I decided to create a series of digital celebrity portraits, he was at the top of my list. Furthermore, painting someone you actually knew — even briefly — changes everything about how you approach the work.
How I Create Digital Celebrity Portraits
First, let me explain what these portraits are and how they differ from my acrylic pop art. My pop art celebrity series uses bold, flat planes of color painted by hand on gallery-stretched canvas. In contrast, my digital portraits take a completely different approach — soft, painterly, and almost impressionistic in style.
I use Midjourney and Photoshop to create each piece. However, it’s not as simple as running a photo through a filter. Instead, I carefully craft detailed prompts that specify the style, mood, lighting, color palette, and artistic atmosphere of each portrait. Consequently, every piece reflects my artistic vision and decision-making — not just the AI’s output.
For example, the Zappa portrait uses a loose watercolor technique with warm earthy tones and expressive brushwork. The soft background contrasts beautifully with the detailed rendering of his iconic hair and mustache. Moreover, the overall mood captures something contemplative and human — qualities that defined Zappa as an artist.
A Collection of 26 Musicians and Sports Figures
The Zappa portrait is part of a growing collection. In total, I currently have 26 digital celebrity portraits featuring musicians and sports figures. Furthermore, I’m adding new portraits regularly as the collection continues to grow.
Each portrait is created with the same careful attention to prompt engineering and artistic direction. In addition, I’m exploring an exciting next step — adding these digital images to canvas using acrylic paint. As a result, the line between digital and traditional art will blur in a completely new way.
Is This Really Art? Absolutely.
Some people question whether AI-assisted art is truly creative. However, consider this — a photographer chooses the subject, the light, the angle, and the moment. Similarly, I choose the style, the mood, the color temperature, and the emotional tone of every portrait. Consequently, the AI is simply my brush. The artistic decisions are entirely mine.
Moreover, when the subject is someone you actually knew — someone whose voice and presence you remember — the creative choices become deeply personal. That’s not artificial. In fact, that’s about as human as art gets.
